The Righteousness of God: Life in the Spirit

Therefore. The glorious therefore responds to chapter 7's cry: Who will rescue me from this body of death?

The answer: There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

This is the pinnacle of Romans. No condemnation now or ever. Life in the Spirit. Adoption as sons. Groaning for redemption. Inseparable from God's love.

No condemnation

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

No condemnation means no judicial verdict of guilt. This is absolute: no condemnation, now or ever.

The ground: being in Christ Jesus. Union with Christ changes everything.

Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. The Spirit's power breaks sin's power.

What the law was powerless to do, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. God condemned sin in the flesh.

Union with Christ means no condemnation.

Life according to the Spirit

"Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires."

Two orientations: flesh or Spirit. The mind's focus reveals the heart's allegiance.

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. This is total inability. Apart from the Spirit, submission to God is impossible.

Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

Flesh produces death; Spirit produces life.

The Spirit dwells in you

"You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ."

Transition from flesh to Spirit is definitive. The Spirit's indwelling is the mark of belonging to Christ.

No Spirit, no Christianity. The Spirit of God and Spirit of Christ are used interchangeably, affirming the Trinity.

If Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.

And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you.

The indwelling Spirit guarantees resurrection.

Led by the Spirit

"For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God."

Being led by the Spirit is the mark of God's children. This is not sinless perfection but a pattern of life.

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.

Adoption confers full legal rights as sons. By Him we cry, Abba, Father. We are children, not slaves.

The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. This is internal assurance. The Spirit confirms what God declares.

We are adopted as sons, not enslaved as servants.

Heirs with Christ

"Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory."

Sonship means heirship. We inherit with Christ. Co-heirs means equal inheritance.

Suffering precedes glory. Sharing Christ's sufferings qualifies us to share His glory. This is the already-not yet: suffering now, glory later.

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Present suffering is light compared to coming glory.

Suffering now, glory later.

Creation groans

"For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed."

All creation waits eagerly, head outstretched. Creation longs for the revelation of God's sons because it will share in their liberation.

Creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope.

The creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. The groaning is purposeful, not meaningless.

Redemption is cosmic, not just personal.

We ourselves groan

"Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies."

Believers also groan. The firstfruits of the Spirit is the down payment, guaranteeing full harvest.

We groan for full adoption: bodily resurrection. Redemption includes the body, not escape from it. We await physical transformation.

For in this hope we were saved. Hope is confident expectation of what is not yet seen. We wait for it patiently.

We groan, awaiting bodily resurrection.

The Spirit intercedes

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."

The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We don't know how to pray as we should. The Spirit intercedes with groans too deep for words.

God searches hearts and knows the Spirit's mind. The Spirit's intercession aligns with God's will. This guarantees that our prayers, even when inarticulate, are heard and answered.

The Spirit prays in us and for us.

All things for good

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

The promise: God works all things together for good. Not that all things are good, but God uses all things for good.

The beneficiaries: those who love God and are called. Good is defined by God's purpose, not our comfort.

For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son. The goal: conformity to Christ's image.

And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those He justified, He also glorified. The golden chain of salvation.

God works all things for our good and His glory.

More than conquerors

"What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

If God is for us, all opposition is overcome. This is not that no one opposes, but that no opposition succeeds.

He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?

Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died, who was raised, who is at God's right hand, who intercedes for us.

Condemnation is impossible.

Nothing can separate us

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

A comprehensive list: death, life, angels, demons, present, future, powers, height, depth, anything else in all creation.

Absolutely nothing can separate us from God's love in Christ Jesus. This is the believer's unshakable security.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

We are more than conquerors through Christ's love.

Final exhortation

Romans 8 is the believer's charter: no condemnation, life in the Spirit, adoption as sons, certain glorification, and inseparable love.

There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. The Spirit dwells in us, guarantees our resurrection, and intercedes for us.

We are heirs with Christ, sharing His sufferings now and His glory later. Creation groans, we groan, and the Spirit groans—all awaiting redemption.

God works all things for our good. Nothing can separate us from His love. We are more than conquerors through Christ.

Do not fear condemnation. Do not doubt your adoption. Do not question God's love. You are in Christ, and nothing can change that.

Closing prayer

Father, thank You that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Thank You for the indwelling Spirit, who gives life, leads us, assures us, and intercedes for us. May we trust that nothing can separate us from Your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. In His name, amen.
