Read John 1

The Love of God in John 1

John 1 does not begin with man. It begins with Christ.

It does not begin by asking how we can improve ourselves. It begins by revealing who Jesus is. That is where true faith must begin.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Jesus did not begin in Bethlehem. He is eternal. He is not merely a teacher, prophet, or spiritual example. He is the eternal Son of God.

And this is the foundation of the love of God:

God did not merely send instruction. He sent His Son.

Christ is the center

John does not allow us to think small thoughts about Jesus.

He is not one path among many. He is not an accessory to life. He is the Word who was with God and is God. All things were made through Him, and in Him is life.

That means our deepest need is not better behavior first. Our deepest need is Christ.

We do not need mere motivation.

We need life.

And John tells us where that life is found:

In Him.

The love of God enters darkness

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

This is the love of God: that He did not leave the world in darkness. He sent the Light.

Jesus entered a world darkened by sin, and the darkness could not overcome Him. No sin is greater than Christ. No bondage is greater than Christ. No darkness has the final word where Christ shines.

The tragedy and the hope

John tells us that Christ came into the world, and yet many did not receive Him.

This is the tragedy of sin. Man is so darkened in heart that even when the Light comes, he resists.

But John also gives hope:

"To all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."

This is the mercy of God.

Through Christ, sinners are not only forgiven — they are brought into the family of God.

The Word became flesh

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us."

This is one of the most glorious truths in all of Scripture.

God did not save from a distance. He came near.

Jesus Christ, full of grace and truth, entered the human condition to reveal the Father and to save sinners. The love of God is not abstract. It is revealed in the person of Christ.

Behold the Lamb of God

John the Baptist says:

"Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"

This is the heart of the gospel.

Jesus did not come only to teach. He came to take away sin. He came as the Lamb God provided for guilty people who could never save themselves.

That is the love of God: holy, saving, sacrificial love.

Final exhortation

John 1 calls us to see Jesus rightly.

He is the eternal Word.

He is the Light in the darkness.

He is the Son full of grace and truth.

He is the Lamb of God who takes away sin.

Do not reduce Him to inspiration.

Do not lower Him to self-help.

Receive Him. Believe in Him. Follow Him.

Because the love of God is revealed fully in Jesus Christ, and there is no life apart from Him.

Closing prayer

Father, thank You for revealing Your love in Jesus Christ. Open our eyes to see Him rightly, receive Him fully, and follow Him faithfully. In Jesus' name, amen.
