The Love of God: It Is Finished
John 19 is the cross.
Here the love of God is fully revealed.
Not in words. In blood.
Not in theory. In sacrifice.
Behold the man
Pilate presents Jesus to the crowd:
"Here is the man!"
Mocked. Beaten. Crowned with thorns.
This is what the love of God looks like in a fallen world.
Rejected. Despised. Crucified.
The love of God does not conquer through force. It conquers through suffering.
Crucify him!
The crowd shouts:
"Crucify him! Crucify him!"
Pilate tries to release Him, but fear wins.
He hands Jesus over to be crucified.
And Jesus carries His cross to Golgotha.
The love of God bears the weight of our sin and walks to the place of execution.
It is finished
On the cross, Jesus says:
"I am thirsty."
They give Him sour wine.
Then He says:
"It is finished."
And He bows His head and gives up His spirit.
This is not defeat.
This is completion.
The work of salvation is finished.
The debt is paid.
The sacrifice is complete.
The love of God does not leave the work half-done. It finishes what it starts.
Blood and water
A soldier pierces Jesus' side, and blood and water flow out.
This is proof of death.
But it is also a picture of cleansing and life.
The love of God cleanses through the blood of Christ and gives life through His death.
Joseph and Nicodemus
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus take Jesus' body and bury it.
Two secret disciples become bold in Jesus' death.
The love of God transforms even in death.
Final exhortation
The love of God in John 19 is this:
Christ finished the work the Father gave Him to do.
He bore our sin. He paid our debt. He died our death.
And through His death, we have life.
Do not look away from the cross.
Do not minimize the suffering.
Do not think it could have been avoided.
Because the love of God is revealed most clearly at the cross, where Jesus said, "It is finished."
Closing prayer
Father, thank You for the love revealed at the cross. Thank You that Jesus finished the work of salvation and paid the debt we could never pay. Help us to never forget the cost of our redemption. In Jesus' name, amen.
