The Love of God: I Have Overcome the World
John 16 prepares the disciples for what is coming.
Persecution. Sorrow. Confusion.
But Jesus ends with a promise of victory.
And the love of God is this: Christ has overcome the world.
The Helper will convict the world
Jesus says the Spirit will come and:
"...will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment."
The Spirit does not merely comfort.
He convicts.
He exposes sin. He reveals righteousness. He announces judgment.
The love of God does not leave the world in darkness. It sends the Spirit to shine light.
Your sorrow will turn to joy
Jesus tells them:
"You will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy."
He compares it to a woman in labor.
Pain comes first.
But then joy when the child is born.
The love of God does not remove sorrow. But it promises that sorrow is not the end.
Ask and you will receive
Jesus says:
"Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."
Prayer in Jesus' name is not magic.
It is praying according to His will, in His authority, for His glory.
The love of God invites us to ask, and promises to answer for our joy.
I have overcome the world
Jesus concludes:
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
This is the promise.
Not that we will avoid trouble.
But that Christ has overcome.
The love of God does not promise escape. It promises victory through Christ.
Final exhortation
The love of God in John 16 is this:
The Spirit will come and convict the world.
Sorrow will turn to joy.
Prayer will be answered.
And Christ has overcome the world.
Do not fear the tribulation that is coming.
Do not think sorrow means defeat.
Take heart. Jesus has overcome. And in Him, so will you.
Closing prayer
Father, thank You that Your Son has overcome the world. Thank You for the promise that sorrow will turn to joy and that we can pray in Jesus' name. Give us courage to face tribulation and faith to believe that victory is already won. In Jesus' name, amen.
