Read John 15

The Love of God: Abide in Me

John 15 gives us the image of the vine and the branches.

Jesus is the vine.

We are the branches.

And the love of God flows like sap from the vine to the branches, producing fruit.

I am the true vine

Jesus says:

"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener."

Israel was called to be God's vine but failed.

Now Jesus is the true vine.

And we are united to Him.

The love of God grafts us into Christ so that His life flows through us.

Abide in me

Jesus commands:

"Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me."

This is not optional.

Apart from Christ, we can do nothing.

We do not produce fruit by trying harder.

We produce fruit by abiding.

The love of God calls us to dependence, not independence.

Pruning produces more fruit

Jesus says:

"He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful."

Pruning hurts.

But it is not punishment. It is care.

The Father cuts away what hinders so that we bear more fruit.

The love of God disciplines those it loves.

Love one another

Jesus says:

"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you."

The fruit of abiding is love.

Not just any love.

Love modeled on the cross.

The love of God flows from Christ to us and through us to others.

The world will hate you

Jesus warns:

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first."

Abiding in Christ means sharing in His rejection.

The world that crucified Jesus will oppose those who follow Him.

The love of God does not promise comfort in this world. It promises presence in suffering.

Final exhortation

The love of God in John 15 is this:

Christ is the vine. We are the branches.

Apart from Him, we can do nothing.

In Him, we bear much fruit.

Abide in Christ.

Remain in His love.

Obey His commands.

Because the love of God sustains, prunes, and produces fruit in all who remain in the vine.

Closing prayer

Father, thank You for grafting us into the true vine. Help us to abide in Christ, to remain in His love, and to bear fruit that glorifies You. Teach us to love as we have been loved. In Jesus' name, amen.
