Read John 7

The Love of God Divides

John 7 shows us that Jesus does not unify everyone.

He divides.

Some believe. Some reject. Some are confused. But no one stays neutral.

And this division reveals what is in the human heart.

Even His brothers do not believe

Jesus' own brothers urge Him to go to the feast and show Himself publicly.

But John tells us:

"For even his own brothers did not believe in him."

This is heartbreaking.

They grew up with Him. They saw His life. Yet they do not believe.

The love of God is patient, but it does not force belief. Even those closest to Jesus must choose.

Jesus teaches in the temple

Jesus goes to the feast secretly, then begins teaching openly in the temple.

The crowd is amazed. "How did this man get such learning without having been taught?"

Jesus answers:

"My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me."

This is the heart of the issue. Is Jesus from God, or is He a deceiver?

Everything depends on the answer to that question.

The crowd is divided

Some say, "He is a good man."

Others say, "No, he deceives the people."

The authorities want to arrest Him, but His hour has not yet come.

Some believe. The Pharisees are furious. Nicodemus cautiously defends Him.

The love of God does not create false peace. It creates division between belief and unbelief.

Rivers of living water

On the last day of the feast, Jesus cries out:

"Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them."

John explains that Jesus is speaking about the Holy Spirit.

The love of God is this: Christ does not merely quench thirst for a moment. He becomes a spring within us, a source of life that flows outward.

Why the division?

Why do some believe and others reject?

The text gives us clues:

But those who are thirsty—who recognize their need—come to Jesus and drink.

The love of God does not hide. It offers living water openly. But it requires us to admit we are thirsty.

No one ever spoke like this man

The temple guards return without arresting Jesus.

The Pharisees demand, "Why didn't you bring him in?"

The guards answer:

"No one ever spoke the way this man does."

Even those sent to arrest Him are stopped by His words.

This is the power of Christ. His teaching carries authority. His words expose the heart. His presence demands a response.

Final exhortation

The love of God in John 7 is this:

Christ offers living water to all who are thirsty.

But He does not force anyone to drink.

He teaches openly. He speaks with authority. He invites all to come.

And then He lets people choose.

Some will believe. Some will reject. Some will be confused. But no one will stay neutral.

Where do you stand?

Are you thirsty?

Are you willing to come to Jesus and drink, even if it costs you?

Because the love of God offers living water, but it does not remove the choice.

Closing prayer

Father, thank You for offering living water through Jesus Christ. Give us the humility to admit our thirst and the faith to come to Him and drink. Do not let fear, pride, or tradition keep us from the water only He can give. In Jesus' name, amen.
