The Supremacy of Christ: Greater Than Moses
Hebrews 3 compares Jesus to Moses—the most revered figure in Jewish history.
Moses gave the Law. Moses led Israel out of Egypt. Moses spoke with God face to face.
Yet Hebrews declares: Jesus is greater than Moses.
"Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself."
Moses: Faithful Servant
The writer does not diminish Moses. He honors him.
Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant. He bore witness to what God would speak in the future. He pointed forward to the coming Messiah.
Moses was a faithful servant. But Jesus is the faithful Son.
The distinction is critical. Moses served within God's household. Jesus built the household. Moses was part of the structure. Jesus is the architect.
Moses testified to future revelation. Jesus is the final revelation.
Christ: Faithful Son Over God's House
"But Christ is faithful as the Son over God's house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory."
Jesus is not merely in the house; He is over the house. He is not a servant within the structure; He is the Son ruling the household.
And who is God's house? We are—if we hold firmly to our confidence and hope.
True faith perseveres. Those who endure prove they belong to Christ. Apostasy reveals what was never genuine.
Do Not Harden Your Hearts
The chapter shifts to a solemn warning drawn from Psalm 95 and Israel's wilderness rebellion.
"Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion."
Israel saw God's power—the plagues, the Red Sea parting, manna from heaven. Yet they hardened their hearts in unbelief.
Seeing miracles is not the same as having faith.
They tested God in the wilderness despite forty years of His provision. Their hearts went astray. They refused to trust and obey.
And God swore in His anger: "They shall never enter my rest."
The generation that left Egypt died in the wilderness. They came so close to the Promised Land yet never entered because of unbelief.
The Warning to Believers
"See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God."
This warning is addressed to believers.
Apostasy is real. It begins with a sinful, unbelieving heart. It progresses through gradual hardening. It ends with turning away from the living God.
The danger is not sudden rebellion but slow drift through unbelief.
Sin is deceitful. It promises freedom but delivers bondage. It promises life but brings death. It hardens the heart incrementally until turning back seems impossible.
Encourage One Another Daily
"But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called 'Today,' so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness."
The remedy is daily encouragement within the community of faith.
We need each other. Isolation breeds hardness. Fellowship fosters faith.
Today is always the day of decision. Not tomorrow. Not someday. Today.
As long as it is called Today, we must encourage, exhort, and strengthen one another in the faith.
We Share in Christ If We Hold Firm
"We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end."
Perseverance is the evidence of genuine faith.
This is not legalism. It is not earning salvation through endurance. It is recognizing that true faith endures.
Those who truly belong to Christ hold firm to the end.
Not perfectly. Not without struggle. But they do not abandon Christ. They do not harden their hearts. They continue to believe, trust, and obey.
Final Exhortation
Jesus is greater than Moses.
Moses was a faithful servant. Jesus is the faithful Son.
Do not harden your hearts as Israel did in the wilderness. Do not let unbelief take root.
Hear His voice today. Encourage one another daily. Hold firmly to your confidence in Christ.
Because those who do not believe will not enter His rest.
Closing Prayer
Father, we confess that our hearts are prone to wander and harden. Give us soft hearts that hear Your voice today. Surround us with brothers and sisters who encourage us toward faith. Help us hold firmly to Christ until the end. In Jesus' name, amen.
