Read 1 Peter 4

Hope in Suffering: Living for God's Will

Peter has called believers to holy living, submission, and blessing their enemies. Now he turns to the end of all things and the fiery ordeal facing the church.

Suffering is not strange. It is expected.

And it has a purpose: to conform believers to Christ, to purify the church, and to prepare them for glory.

Arm Yourselves with Christ's Attitude

"Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin."

Arm yourselves. Military language. Suffering for Christ requires preparation and resolve.

The attitude is Christ's: willingness to suffer for righteousness, trust in the Father, endurance without retaliation.

And suffering for Christ severs ties with sin. Physical suffering for righteousness purifies motives and desires.

Suffering shifts priorities from self to God.

"As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God."

Reorientation of life purpose. Before: driven by fleshly cravings. After: governed by divine intent.

The past was sufficient for sin. The present is for righteousness.

Enough Time Wasted

"For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry."

Catalog of the former life. Debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, idolatry.

Enough time has been wasted on sin. The past is sufficient for evil.

The present and future are for God's will.

"They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you."

Conversion changes behavior. And the world notices.

They are astonished. How can you live differently? Why do you not join the party?

And when you refuse, they heap abuse. Ridicule. Insult. Rejection.

Righteous living provokes hostility from those still in darkness.

They Will Give Account

"But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead."

The wicked mock now. But they will answer later.

God is ready to judge. No one escapes accountability. Final judgment vindicates the righteous and condemns the rebellious.

The day of reckoning is coming.

The End Is Near

"The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray."

Eschatological urgency. History is moving toward consummation.

The end is near. Christ's return is imminent. This reality changes everything.

Be alert. Be sober-minded. Pray.

Imminence of Christ's return motivates vigilance and devotion.

Love Covers a Multitude of Sins

"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins."

Above all: love is the priority.

Not casual affection. Deep love. Fervent love. Earnest love.

And love covers a multitude of sins. Not hiding them, but forgiving them. Overlooking offenses. Extending grace. Restoring relationships.

Love is the glue that holds the Christian community together.

Hospitality and Stewardship

"Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."

Hospitality: welcoming strangers, opening your home, sharing your life.

And do it without grumbling. Joyfully, not begrudgingly.

Each believer has received a gift from God. Use it to serve others. Gifts are for the body, not for self.

You are stewards, not owners.

God's grace comes in various forms. Different gifts, one Giver. Faithfulness is required, not perfection.

Speak and Serve for God's Glory

"If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ."

All ministry is empowered by God and directed to His glory.

If you speak, speak God's words. If you serve, do so with God's strength.

Human effort without divine strength is futile.

To Him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

Do Not Be Surprised at the Fiery Ordeal

"Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you."

Do not be surprised. Suffering is normal, not strange.

The fiery ordeal: intense persecution, testing by fire. It refines and purifies.

Expect persecution, not comfort.

Something strange would be a life without trials. Christ promised tribulation in this world (John 16:33).

Rejoice in Sharing Christ's Sufferings

"But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed."

Sharing Christ's sufferings now leads to sharing His glory later.

This is not masochism. It is eschatological perspective. Present suffering, future joy.

Participation in Christ includes both suffering and glory.

"If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you."

Persecution for Christ's name brings divine presence.

The Spirit glorifies God in suffering saints. Insult becomes honor. Rejection becomes blessing.

The Spirit of glory rests on those who suffer for Christ.

Suffer for the Right Reasons

"If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name."

Suffering for sin brings no honor. Righteous suffering glorifies God.

Do not suffer as a criminal or busybody. Suffer as a Christian.

And when you do, do not be ashamed. Praise God. The name Christian is a badge of honor, not disgrace.

Judgment Begins with God's Household

"For it is time for judgment to begin with God's household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?"

Purifying judgment starts with believers, not unbelievers.

If the righteous face trials, the wicked face wrath. Present discipline versus future condemnation.

"And, 'If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?'"

Salvation is costly. It required God's Son. If believers endure trials, unbelievers face eternal judgment.

The difficulty of salvation highlights the severity of rejecting it.

Commit Yourselves to Your Faithful Creator

"So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good."

Suffering is not random. It is under divine sovereignty.

Trust God's character in suffering. He is faithful. He is Creator. He holds all things.

And continue to do good. Faithfulness in trials honors the faithful Creator.

Suffering does not excuse disobedience. It calls for deeper trust.

Final Exhortation

Peter calls believers to live for God's will, not human desires.

The end is near. Love deeply. Offer hospitality. Use your gifts to serve. Speak God's words. Serve with God's strength.

Do not be surprised by suffering. Rejoice in sharing Christ's sufferings. Suffer for the right reasons. Trust the faithful Creator.

And continue to do good, no matter the cost.

Closing Prayer

Father, help us live for Your will, not our desires. As the end draws near, give us fervent love, joyful hospitality, and faithful stewardship. Sustain us through the fiery ordeal, and help us rejoice in sharing Christ's sufferings. In Jesus' name, amen.
